Be prepared to remove a lot trash, in any job.
This is the biggest challenge for any scrap metal collector, It took me a good year to find reliable sources. Most places that have quite a bit of scrap metals lying around already have a system of removal and recycling that is profitable. With that being said the ideal sources are not going to have the capability to handle the material and waste. When I asked myself this I immediately thought of hospitals, hotels and senior care facilities. I have worked in a couple senior care facilities and both did not have the time and space to properly recycle metals, so they threw it in the dumpsters or called the waste services to have larger items picked up. If you are going to call and approach a hospital, hotel or senior care facility you will be calling for the maintenance director aka environmental services director aka director of grounds and maintenance. Call all of the places you can find and get in touch with these directors and just let them know you are available and your capacity, or how much you can handle in weight etc. You should not expect your phone to be ringing off the hook, but they will call you if they don't already have an arrangement. You should expect that you will have to remove some large items that you cant scrap. Older and larger places toss out a lot of broken appliances, which can be scraped as a whole. Try to avoid refrigerators, or make sure your local scrap yard will accept them. The refrigerant has to be removed by a licensed individual. Another good idea is to get in contact with a property manager, let them know your available, but also make sure that you charge for this, find our how much the dump is going to charge you and come up with a fair price. Know that you are going to more cost effective than a contractor doing waste removal, bid per job, not hourly.
