Getting Started

In order to get started in the scrap venture you will need a few essentials.

Proper Vehicle

If you don't have a truck or a van you probably wont be able to hold enough material to make a profit. The best vehicle for scraping is going to be a cargo van, such as a 12 passenger van, or an SUV such as a bronco, Wagoneer etc. If you have an enclosed vehicle its going to be ideal so you can lock up your material. Having a tow hitch and a flat bed trailer to go behind is great for larger items but honestly there is more money in smaller and more precious metal items.

Tools

Its always a good idea to have a few time saving tools around. An angle grinder with a metal cut off wheel.  Your best friend in this is going to be a reciprocating saw. Make sure to spring for a nice pack of bi-metal blades and in a few minutes you can cut down an item to fit in your vehicle and also make it easier to lift. "Tin Snips" or "Aviation Snips" are great for cutting down thinner metals and can also easily double to cut wires and other difficult materials like zip ties. Its good to carry a wrench or socket set. Other helpful tools are 6 in 1 driver, needle nose pliers and a utility knife.

Safety

Remember always wear some gloves and some glasses when cutting metal, it gets hot and throws off sparks that can permanently damage your eyes, a pair of safety sunglasses works well. Having some containers for sorted metals are helpful, some old paint buckets, milk crates or trash cans work great, specially at the scrap yard for sorting your metal grades.
